(American Red Cross Certification Course)

These courses teaches the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic first aid care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.  This course does NOT include information on breathing or cardiac emergencies.

Text Box: Lifeguard Certification Course
(American Red Cross Certification Course)

This course will teach students all of the skills and procedures necessary to become a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard.  CPR, AED and First Aid certifications are included in this course.  Upon successfully completing all requirements, students will receive American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.

PRE-REQUISITES:  You Must…

· Be age 15 or over

· Pass a pre-requisite skills test given at the beginning of the course:  300 yard swim:  100 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 either Freestyle or Breaststroke, Surface dive and recover a 10 lb. weight and tow 25 yards.  (This skill is times).

· 100% attendance for all classroom & pool sessions.  MISSED SESSIONS CANNOT BE MADE UP!

· Pass both a practical and written exam.

Course #1:  April 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 & 18

Course #2:  May 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 & 23

· There is a $25 non-refundable registration fee that is incorporated into the above listed program fee.  Any participant who is unable to perform the pre-requisite skill test will be notified.  They will receive a refund in the mail (less the $25 Registration Fee).

Lifeguard Training “Prep” Sessions

These 1-hour sessions will help lifeguard candidates to prepare to take Lifeguard Training courses.  We will concentrate on the skills needed to pass the pre-requisite skills test (listed above) that is given on the first night of the lifeguard course. 

Session #1:  Thursday, April 1st, 7:30-8:30 pm

Session #2:  Thursday, May 6th, 7:30-8:30 pm

Fee:  $20 per session

 

Text Box: YMCA Lifeguard “Crossover”/Renewal Course

The purpose of this course is to provide knowledge and skills that vary from the American Red Cross Lifeguard program.  This is a crossover from American Red Cross Lifeguard certification to YMCA Lifeguard Certification.  This course will also recertify those who need to renew their YMCA Lifeguard Certification.

Students certified through another agency’s program (e.g. ARC, RLSS, GSA, Ellis and USLA) may participate in the YMCA Lifeguard Crossover.  However, please be informed that this course is specifically designed for crossover from the ARC course.  Students who do not successfully complete YMCA Lifeguard Crossover will need to take the full-length, standard YMCA Lifeguard course for certification.

PRE-REQUISITES:  You Must…

· Be age 16 or over

· Pass the following swim test:  Long shallow front dive, then swim 500 yds, including 100 yards each of:  sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach.  Tread water for at least two minutes with legs only.  Surface dive headfirst and feet first in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet..

· 100% attendance for all classroom & pool sessions.  MISSED SESSIONS CANNOT BE MADE UP!

· Pass both a practical and written exam .

Text Box: Scuba  Certification Course

This course provides participants with the basic knowledge and skills to teach YMCA swim lessons to parent/child pairs, preschoolers, youth and adults.  It includes both land and pool sessions on lesson plans, teaching methodology, class organization, class components and skills for the YMCA progressive program.  The course also covers the Y’s expectations for instructors and outlines their responsibilities for teaching YMCA Aquatics classes that are student-centered values-oriented, and safe and effective in teaching aquatic skills.

PRE-REQUISITES:

· Minimum age 16 years

· Current CPR/AED Pro Certification

· Current First Aid Certification

· Current Oxygen Administration Certification

· Ability to demonstrate proficiency in Minnow Level swimming skills

 

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED:  Lifeguard certification.  Read the textbooks prior to attending the course (Teaching Swimming Fundamentals Manual, Parent/Child Preschool Manual, Youth and Adult Manual). Manuals can be ordered through the YMCA Program Store or Amazaon.com

Open Water Diver:    This is the scuba diver course that takes you from non-diver to certified scuba diver through a combination of academic training, confined water (pool) training, and open water checkout dives.  After this course, you will be on your way to many wonderful adventures.  This SDI (Scuba Diving International) course makes it possible for you to do most of the academic requirements for your entry-level diver certification on-line right from your own computer, at your convenience.  You will also complete your in-water skill-development sessions and final open-water training dives with Outdoor Sports Shop Scuba & Kayak Center, an SDI 5 Star Dive Center.

 

Rental equipment provided for use during class:  Scuba cylinder with air, buoyancy control device (BCD), regulator with gauges, wet suit.

 

Student must provide:  Mask, snorkel, fins, wet suit boots, wet suit gloves, and weight.

 

Unless the student already has this equipment, it is recommended that it is not purchase until after the class begins.  Part of the training is learning about scuba equipment.  Each student will receive a 10% student discount on their personal equipment purchases from Outdoor Sports Shop Scuba & Kayak Center for a period of one year from the start of class.
